mids and highs speakers, because of the frequencies they play its very easy to tell their location, if staging is not taken in to consideration. what this means is, that you have to find a spot for them, where the sound seem to surround you. this is a rather tricky thing to do and there is no easy answere to your question, it is also very vehicle dependent.
what you need to do to find the best posible location, wich is going to be a little tricky to do but really worth the extra trouble, is to find a way to place the speaker in the general location that you want the speakers to be installed at, but in a manner where it would be easy to reangle them to change the imaging.
one thing that will help you in getting them to sound their best is to keep the mids and the tweets very close together. so that it seems more like the sound is coming out of the same speaker. and become harder to pin point their location, the closer the better.
once you have them placed in the general area, where you want them to be installed. play some music, material that will cover just about all the sound frequencies rather then just the top end, that way you can get a better idea of not only how well the staging is for that location, but how well they will sound in that particular location in terms of harshness and if they fatige the ear, and if you really would like them in that particular location.
now change their angle till you find that sweet spot, where the sound seems to surround you, rather then you being able to tell their particular location just by using the ear. if that particular location does not allow for the sound to surrond you at any angle, then move them a couple of inches to a new location and start the prosses over till youre happy with the output.
the angle of the windshield, angle of some of the panels and type of materials used in the car, has allot to do with how the speakers stage in a particular location. the angle of the panels in the interior, will actualy reflect sound in a positive or negative way. sound could be absorved or reflected depending on the materials in the vehicle.
i found that for one of my vehicles, it was best for them to be faced up right on the edge of the windshield on the dash in the stock location, i did try other locations that where more custom, because i wanted to fabricate a nice fiberglass enclosure for them, with all the bells and wisles, but that was the best posible location for them speakers in that particular vehicle. but on one of my other vehicles it was better to have those same speakers, down on the bottom of the door.
Edit: WOW thats a big post. lol
