polishing motors

Well, i was sitting around today and got a little bored, so i went ahead and polished a few of my 4hp motors.

what i did was-

taped off the gap, and the pole vent.
Took various grades sandpaper (i used 360,400,500,600,800,1000,1200,1500,2000,2500)
wiped the motor down with water
Wet sanded the front and back plates, wiping the motor down often.
start with the lowest grit, and work up
Then took metal polish (i used Mothers billet metal polish)

took a while (it took me about 3hrs per motor, but i work slow)
I think it turned out well! Here are some pics-

Before pics-
Top plate. Notice the oxidation, and general grime from years of use-

Back plate. Again- Same oxidation/grime

Side view-

After pics-
Top plate-

Back plate-

Side view- (i also put on a spare motor boot i had around)

Only thing I'm going to do from here, i may take some rubbing compound, and try some final polishing, also looking for higher grit paper, to go even more...
So- what do you guys think?

probably not, as long as it doesn't get inside it i dont' think there would be too many ill effects

Really- as long as it doesnt sit in the water its ok! and yes water in the sub is probably bad.. as a motor, though, its not so big of a deal, and also- like i said- that gap and pole vent were taped off. just removed for pics

the magnet probably won't rust by having a bit of water on it

That, and the water gets wiped right off! what i did is this- fold a 5x7 sheet of sand paper into fourths. wipe motor down, sand with one of the sides of paper, then dry motor off. wipe down, sand...etc. at the end i wiped it down one final time, then dry the plate, then polished

I'm not sure what material was used, but I've got an old Blueprint 01 series motor (xbl) that has signs of rust on the second gap landing. Kinda hard to clean that off .

Oh well, it's been sitting in my room for like 2 years now...I'm sure it still works.
